Laurel Blakemore MD on Fine Fleur winning the Eli Farri Grand Prix at Tampa
Laurel C. Blakemore, MD December 2021
Although she did not come from an equestrian background, Laurel was been passionate about horses from an early age. She started taking weekly lessons near Philadelphia at the age of 7 and was fortunate enough to begin competing (in western reining!) at age 10. She moved to show jumping as a teenager and has continued throughout her life, including competing at Young Riders and the Dublin Horse show, and riding with Rodney Jenkins during her medical training. She has been competing with Dana and Chuck Waters for the past five years as much as her work schedule allows.
Laurelís current string includes Angelís Envy, Folsom, Crossfire 10, and Fine Fleur, with whom she won the Eli Farris Memorial Grand Prix in Tampa last fall. She competes in the amateur jumpers to the Grand Prix level in Florida and the southeast. Laurel also operates a small breeding operation in Williston, Florida with her husband Steve Ondra.
Dr. Blakemore is currently the CEO of Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) in Fairfax, Virginia, one of the nations largest multispecialty pediatric practices. Prior to returning to the Washington region, Dr. Blakemore was a Division Chief and Professor of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Florida Health System, where she held the Shriners Endowed Chair in Pediatric Orthopedics at the University of Florida School of Medicine. An internationally respected healthcare executive, pediatric orthopedic surgeon, researcher and educator, Dr. Laurel Blakemore has profoundly impacted the care of children on both personal and macroeconomic levels.
She feels incredibly fortunate that she can maintain both her surgical career and show jumping passion, and that from time to time her medical skills can be put to good use for her fellow equestrians at ringside.
